The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys with Concert Royal

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, the Saint Thomas Choir and soloists will perform some of the most beautiful and moving of Mozart’s sacred choral works.

Vesperae solennes de confessore, the Solemn Vespers, was written in 1780. The composition transcends the traditions of Salzburg church music in its richness and depth, multiplicity of ideas and artful inventiveness. Exsultate, jubilate, a soprano solo motet, transports us into a sweeping exuberance, particularly in the closing “Alleluia.” Ave verum corpus, a mere forty-six bars of music, is remarkable for its compactness and apparent simplicity. In its serenity, it resembles parts of Mozart’s Requiem, composed in the same year – the last year of his life.

Missa in C, K. 317 “Coronation Mass,” Mozart’s Mass in C Major, was written in 1778, originally for Easter Sunday. It acquired its nickname when performed for the coronation of Leopold II in 1791. At the time, the Archbishop insisted on strict rules for liturgical music. The complete mass, with soloists, chorus and orchestra, in a work suitable for Salzburg’s massive cathedral and written in a style appropriate to the splendor and joy of Easter Sunday, was to be performed in less than forty-five minutes. Mozart managed to do it in less than thirty. The “Coronation Mass” sparkles with bright orchestral colors, lively choral textures and a sublime soprano aria for the “Agnus Dei.”

A reception for Friends of Music (Patrons and above) will follow the concert, welcoming new friends and old, along with a special birthday toast to Mozart from Maestro John Scott.
