The composition transcends the traditions of Salzburg church music in its richness and depth, multiplicity of ideas and artful inventiveness. Exsultate, jubilate, a soprano solo motet, transports us into a sweeping exuberance, particularly in the closing “Alleluia.” Ave verum corpus, a mere forty-six bars of music, is remarkable for its compactness and apparent simplicity. In its serenity, it resembles parts of Mozart’s Requiem, composed in the same year – the last year of his life.

Missa in C, K. 317 “Coronation Mass,” Mozart’s Mass in C Major, was written in 1778, originally for Easter Sunday. It acquired its nickname when performed for the coronation of Leopold II in 1791. At the time, the Archbishop insisted on strict rules for liturgical music. The complete mass, with soloists, chorus and orchestra, in a work suitable for Salzburg’s massive cathedral and written in a style appropriate to the splendor and joy of Easter Sunday, was to be performed in less than forty-five minutes. Mozart managed to do it in less than thirty. The “Coronation Mass” sparkles with bright orchestral colors, lively choral textures and a sublime soprano aria for the “Agnus Dei.”

A reception for Friends of Music (Patrons and above) will follow the concert, welcoming new friends and old, along with a special birthday toast to Mozart from Maestro John Scott.

How to Order Tickets

Tickets for all concerts are on sale now! It's a very interesting sound if you haven't heard it before.

St. Bartholomew’s Church
Park Ave at 51st St
New York City
Mailing Address
109 East 50th St
New York, NY 10022

Fame Becomes Others, Not Me

Started the new DELIGHTFUL show: "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me"! I have steady gainful employment for the immediate future! The tunes (by Marc Shaiman) are great, Matin Short and the cast are hilarious ( even to this jaded Broadway vet ) the conductor is relaxed and rock-solid and the band is burnin', as always! "Nice Work If You Can Get It..."! I'm definitely going to see this one, which will be the first. What?

Well, they don't give you free tickets because they are trying to MAKE money. So you have to take off a show ( forfeiting your pay for that performance ) and pay for a ticket, the same amount everyone else has to pay. It always feel like a double financial whammy so I've never actually seen any show I've done, as I haven't felt like any of them were worth the monetary kick in the groin. ( won't now launch into the interesting topic of perceiving something like a show ENTIRELY by sound and what that does for/against you ) This one is different! It's good!

Come and see it at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 45th Street. Say "hi" into the pit!

He Proves Once Again He's No Good In The Sack....

When I go on vacation, I really do go on vacation! Ahem....took the family back to the Heartland to a big, crazy reunion in ND that featured me in a sack race! Got to drive around in the middle of nowhere on some gravel roads showing the kids the towns their grandparents grew up in: Maddock, (pop. 1,000) Pembina (pop. 700) and St. John (pop. 250). Saw some great old architecture (interesting churches) and the family castle. Bought an antler whistle. Sent oldest kids to International Music Camp, where I was once a student and later a teacher, though some years ago now. Gained 8 pounds, at least! Got back just in time to start the new job: "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me" at the Bernard B. We all read the same music, but each platoon would choose it's own starting point and tempo for each of the 5 10-minute sections. The sounds were purposefully low with the 5 ledger line "D" below the staff being the bottom written note, while the top compass was somewhere around "C" in the staff. The harmonic rhythm was "stately" with quarter notes being the speediest of the written rhythms.

It was a total thrill being allowed to wallow in the rumble of the low frequency spectrum for 50 minutes, surrounded by- I am not making this up- hundreds of interested fans, who remained faithfully inches away from us even as we MOVED AROUND! I saw some microphones nearby, so someday there may be an accessible sound bite of the fun. So, I created a team in the computer based Stats Diamond Legends League. This league allows you to choose most anyone from baseball history to play on your team, within a set budget, with th "rookies" being people who have been out of baseball for abut 15 years (today's players can be used in a different league). My team: Slooterdam Nation started out like this:

C- Ernie Lombardi
C- Muddy Ruel
1B- John Mayberry
2B- Bobby Grich
2B- Sibby Sisti
3B- Puddin' Head Jones
3B- Billy Grabarkewitz
SS- Glenn Wright
LF- Jesse Burkett
CF- Bill North
RF- Tony Conigliaro
DH- Ken Phelps
OF- Mule Haas
SP- Fritz Peterson
SP- Joaquin Andujar
SP- Denny LeMaster
SP- Craig Swan
MR- Spec Shea
MR- Boom-Boom Beck
MR- Reid Cornelius
Cl- Dan Quisenberry

SN started out middlingly, then tanked their way to the cellar, where they have been comfortably nestled ever since at 19-34 (154 game season). However, there has been a shakeup on the team , and we have renewed hope! Gone, due to insuborination, sloth, or general lameness are: Bobby Grich, John Mayberry, Puddin' Head Jones, Mule Haas, Spec Shea, Boom-Boom Beck and Reid Cornelius. In their places are: Tony Lazzeri, Zeke Bonura, Mike Higgins, Ira Flagstead, Alan Foster, Chuck Smith, and Randy Tomlin. These new charges, I am sure, can lead Slooterdam Nation to mediocrity!

Breathe.......

Apparently some of you have been interested, flattered. What have I been up to? (trying to formulate a coherent thought? Always, but also):

1. New Show: THREEPENNY OPERA.
Off-Broadway at the Roundabout Theatre. Blissful music of the great Kurt Weill. Starring Alan Cumming, Ana Gasteyer, Cyndi Lauper, Jim Dale and Nellie McKay. Since it's NEW (still in previews) I have to do EVERY show until May. Spent much time (just finished) bailing on other commitments that conflicted with new show.

2. Gotham Wind Symphony Recorded: GWS knocks out CD #2, "American Gotham" all premier-recording original works for 45-piece wind band by NYC based jazz folks: Thad Jones, Mike Holober, James Chirillo and Scott Robinson. You will hear on this recording the following sounds: duck call, siren, contrabass clarinet, contrabass saxophone, slide whistle, improvised euphonium jazz, clavioline, and the LaGuardia HS Jazz Band!! MONTHS of planning, everything went well, in MY opinion.

3. Building new project website with ARTISTSHARE: around aforementioned project. Very helpful folks, but still much work to do.

4. Teaching at the 3 colleges: NJCU, CCNY and Lehigh.

5. Repairing chipped tooth, fixing flat tire.

6. Learning to love the New York Red Bulls: My old local soccer team the Metrostars, were bought by Red Bull Energy Drink, Inc., hence the new name. Youri Djorkaeff is the most artistic and creative player on that team. An inspitration, indeed. I have a soft spot in my heart for Red Bull for 2 reasons: 1.) When I was standing on the picket line during the Broadway musician's strike, a Red Bull-shaped car screeched up to us and a very enthusiastic young fellow leapt out and asked, "Are you the striking musicians?" When I answered in the affirmative the chap queried,"Would you like some free Red Bull?" We all accepted the kind offer and were able to strike more effectively from then on! 2.) John Hollenbeck wrote a very nice version of a Monk tune for his large ensemble which he claims to have written very last minute (a commission for the Scottish National jazz Orchestra, I believe) fueled entirely by Red Bull.

Music As A Weapon

I did stay home to watch the Oscars last night, being a John Stewart fan. I immediately noticed that, this year, at the VERY SECOND the award recipient got to the mic, the orchestra started a very soft ballad. At first I thought it was residual sound from some other source (an unusually well-orchestrated cell phone? inside my failing brain?). But when Tom Hanks came out to "help demonstrate this year's new tactic for shortening speeches", my initial suspicion was confirmed: They were using music to frighten people into shutting up! (for those of you who missed it, the Hanks bit had him start to blab too long, causing a 10-member mobile tactical orchestral strike force to ascend from the pit and surroung Hanks, threatening him. The climax was when Hanks was literally smashed over the head with, Stewart later pointed out, a viola. (I did enjoy Stewart's acknowleding of the live orchestra. He pointed out that they had been "down there" for two weeks, offered them a candy bar and surmised that they "must have eaten the 3rd trombone player" out of desperation!)

This brought to mind a recent news item in our own Bergen Record. It said that yet another town (in the US somewhere) was going to try piping Mozart and Beethoven into their city park to try to stop the drug dealing going on there. The article stated that this method had been used before by numerous towns with, it was implied, some success. Hmmmm...

This caused thought about the nominees for Best Original Score, a medley of which Itzhak Perlman was made to play. Mr. Perlman is capable of making the phone book sound like music and he nearly did the same for this medley of droning background fluff. When heard in comparison with what they allowed the orchestra to play behind the montage of great, sweeping epics (Copland, with actual tension, swells, crashes, melody, etc that made the segment MOVE!) it made me think that Hollywood, too, must view much of art music as a dangerous weapon. The "Best Original Score" was, even among unremarkable contenders, hands-down the most banal and cloying. I guess what I mean is that it seems as if soundtrack composers of Hollywood movies (and I suspect, others as well) are not encouraged to write music that actually registers on screen the way any other element of the production does.

So, in the interest of trying not to sound like an old crackpot, here are some exceptions: "Koyaanisqatsi/Powaqqatsi", "The Red Pony", "The Red Violin", "Amadeus", "Anatomy of a Murder" (where the sizzling soundtrack probably overwhelms the movie), "The Manchurian Candidate"(original), "Good Night and Good Luck", "The Man Who Knew Too Much"(original), "Romance With A DoubleBass".

Enjoy! Other candidates?

Area51 debuts, unexplained phenomena abound.

Last night at SUNY Purchase Recital Hall the Area51 Trombone Quartet presented their first programme. The evening was peppered (much like Harry Whittington) with rarely seen events.

1. Roughly 30 people turned out, refusing to believe governmental reports refuting the enjoyability of a trombone quartet recital.

2. These 30 people apparently passed up the chance to watch Olympic Curling on TV to be at said recital.

3. This audience professed afterward to enjoy even the most contemporary literature presented.

4. The trombone was demonstrably able to back up it's well-deserved reputation as "one big tuning slide".

5. Jim Pugh performed on a half-assembled slide (STILL sounding better than everyone else).

6. A late-programme costume change made some of us look even LESS geeky.

7. After (or, possibly during) a speech "perhaps" poking fun at our current national leaders, Mark Patterson's mutes were inexplicably locked in the "green" (this designation does not refer to the "alert" level) room.

8. Mike Christianson missed his high "D". (In curling, there are 2 basic shots: the "draw"{sneak up gracefully to another rock} and the "takeout"{send that baby to the moon}. Jim Pugh, for instance could "draw" up to a high D. I could only attempt a "takeout", but I misread the ice, my embouchure started to curl, I failed to sweep and completely missed it. In curling, sometimes an apparently colossal mistake can turn out well, as in the German men's last-rock boo-bbo against the US that enabled them to score 3 points! This "happy accident" concept sadly doesn't apply in concertized written-out music, however.)

Hollywood Curling!

Yes, indeed! Here's the requested list of major-release motion pictures that I know to feature curling.

1. Her Majestys Secret Service

James Bond does really curl in this rare one (the single Bond performance by George Lazenby, love theme sung by Louis Armstrong!).

2. Men With Brooms

This Canadian-produced comedy is quite enjoyable, with actual strategy and rules worked into the plot. Leslie Nielsen guest
stars.

(other movies that appear on imdb.com under a "curling" search include "Help!" {yes, that one}, "Little Women" , "My Life So Far", and "Gone Curling". The sport invented on a frozen Scottish loch which features a pub built in to every curling facility. Why, you may ask, does he or anyone care about curling? Because I am a trophy-owning experienced curler (presently in geographically forced retirement).

Growing up in ND it was relatively easy to get bored, so one day when 3 friends and I had completely run out of ideas, we spied the lighted, flashing "Try Curling" sign at the local curling club. That's right, I said "curling club". A facility that exists ONLY for curling, and is fully equipped with a bar and an old tack piano. We discovered, as would anyone, that you just can't appreciate how much fun it is to thrust a 44lb. rock down a sheet of ice, trying to guide it around or into your opponents rocks, wielding a broom while trying not to fall down.

Our "rink" (that's curling-speak for "4-person team") with average age of 19 was, by 20 years the youngest of the 32 rinks in the club. So, we stunk. But, they loved us. They were so happy to have some new blood in their club (as well as to have someone to regularly pummel) that they allowed our fledgling rock cover band "Young Caucasians" (in which I was the keyboard operator) to rehearse there. When we found out we could be in the club alone (they gave us a key!) we not only rehearsed, but would actually practice curling. So we got better, but not enough to actually win, just enough to lose less spectacularly.

At the end of the regular league season (during which we went 0-16) the club had a "bonspiel", a 32-team double-elimination tournament. After your first 2 games you would be grouped with teams with like records. We, no surprise, ended up in the 0-2 group (or"event"). ....where we inexplicably won our next 4 games to take the "1st Place in the 4th Event" trophy, pictured here!

Here's a link to USA Curling

http://www.usacurl.org/

where you'll notice that Minnesota and North Dakota are 1&2 in the standings. New Jersey nowhere to be found!

Curling coverage starts Monday 2/13.
Go Team Johnson! Go Team Fenson!
